Research

The world's growing population places great pressure on environmental resources. How do we meet our growing needs for resources, whilst safeguarding them for future generations?

Our research seeks to understand the processes driving evolution and maintenance of biodiversity, and to predict and mitigate the future impacts of anthropogenic change. We have a unique focus on the relationships between people and the environment and our findings inform policy makers and practitioners in conservation and environmental regulation, planning and management.

Awards and accreditations

Many of our environmental science degrees are accredited by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and our students are entitled to free Student Membership of the Institute. Our BSc (Hons) Environmental Science course is also accredited by the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences.

Our Mountain Leader Award is recognised by the Mountain Training Association and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.

Our industry and global connections

The University of Stirling is a hub for conservation activity in Scotland. Several organisations have offices on our campus, including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Scottish Natural Heritage, British Trust for Ornithology and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. We work closely with these and other organisations, such as the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, in conducting research, arranging placements and field training, and developing our Environmental Science and Biology courses.

We also have links with environmental science organisations throughout the UK and overseas, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature, European Environment Agency, Gabonese National Parks Service, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

We’ve worked with Scottish employers to develop our Applied Biological Sciences course, to help solve skills shortages in the life sciences sector.
