Membership

Joining as an external member

External readers who wish to borrow print resources may do so on payment of an annual subscription of £30 (£15 to Stirling University Graduates). The fee is waived for those with SCONUL Access membership cards, for sixth year school pupils and Forth Valley College students and staff.

Due to publisher licence restrictions, external borrowers do not normally have access to online resources.

Access for the public

Members of other university libraries participating in the SCONUL Access Scheme can use this scheme to access the library – details can be found on the SCONUL website.

Members of the public can apply for use of the library through our external members form.

Access for students from other universities

Students from other universities may use the library for reference purposes. No formal application is required except for access to the special collections.  Stirling is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme so if your home institution is a member, you can apply online for a SCONUL Access authorisation email which you can bring to our Library to authorise you borrowing rights with us.    If your institution is not a member you can join the library as an External reader. Please see 'Joining' below.

Access for staff from other universities

Staff from other HE institutions can apply for a SCONUL Access card from your home library. This will permit borrowing at our Library. Please bring your SCONUL Access card to our Lending Services Desk.

Stirling Alumni

Alumni of Stirling University are entitled to join the Library under the same conditions as External members. The annual membership cost is halved to £15.  See the section 'Joining as an external member' above.

Corporate membership

Corporate membership is available to organisations at an annual fee of £70. Email library@stir.ac.uk for further information.

Library fines

It is essential that all Library materials are returned on time. This is to ensure that as far as possible the learning and research needs of all users can be met. To that end fines will be imposed if items are overdue, at the level indicated below.

It should be stressed that our primary interest is in keeping Library stock available, so we make every effort to avoid users incurring fines.

  • Courtesy notices are emailed to every borrower the day before an item (other than 24 hour loan or shorter) is due for return, asking for the item to be returned or renewed
  • Renewal is possible on a 24/7 basis via 'My Record' on the library catalogue
  • Books can be returned via the book drop near the Library entrance 24/7
  • The fines for popular and long-loan items are waived unless required by another

Fine tariff

3 - hour loan 50p per hour or part of hour
24 - hour loan 50p per hour or part of hour
24 - hour photocopy loan 10p per hour or part of hour

Users will be blocked from borrowing when they reach £10 in total for any item or items overdue.

Borrowers may be charged the replacement cost of any items lost or damaged while in their possession.

You can either pay your fines in person in the Library or pay online on the portal by clicking on 'Pay' in the library fines section of 'My Portal'.
