Overview

In this module, students are supported to critically explore environmental issues and consider their implications for dementia care practice. The module has been created in response to a rapidly growing interest in the social and physical environments inhabited by people living with dementia. Importantly, research shows that the environment can both undermine and constrain, but equally can enable and support the person with dementia. The environment can and does play an active role in supporting people to live well with dementia and in the efforts of practitioners to achieve their therapeutic goals in working with the person with dementia. This module will explore the relationship between dementia care and the diverse places and spaces in which it is provided, from hospitals and care homes to domestic settings and outdoor and public spaces.

The module pays attention to both theory and practice-related issues. Topics for discussion in the module include ageing and the environment, the importance of place in person-centred care practice in dementia, architecture and design, technology, home and housing, interior and exterior design for dementia and the policy prominent notion of the ‘dementia friendly community’.
