Loch View Wellbeing Suite

Loch View Wellbeing Suite

The main Wellbeing Suite space is the perfect place to relax, chill out and, most importantly, press pause, escape and recharge. It has sensory-sensitive lighting, mindful music, a water feature and a diffuser with fragrances to take you on a calming sensory journey to relax and de-stress.

While the space is open-plan, there are different areas offering a range of experiences:

Be snug

The Snug Area is a darkened cosy area with a 55-inch wall-mounted TV showing relaxing content including log-burning fires, waterfalls and fish tanks. Or why not connect your own device to the screen to watch a TED Talk to inspire, motivate and empower? Or use your own device on its own while enjoying a refreshing cold drink from the water cooler.

Be entertained

Our games area is a place where students can come and play. Enjoy a game of chess, scrabble or cards with a friend or connect with other students. Jigsaws are also available to provide a little distraction and help you focus your mind. There are two jigsaw boards and a range of jigsaws to try. Or create whatever your imagination desires with our supply of colourful Lego pieces.

Be chatty

We have created semi-private chat areas where students can talk quietly to a friend or a member of the team (appointments must be booked with Mental Health Advisers via Student Hub). Wellbeing drop-in sessions are offered by our Mental Health and Wellbeing Officer, Fiona Glashan, at both the Student Hub and Willow Court Reception. Students are welcome to drop by and ask a quick question or two.

Be creative

Our arts and crafts area boasts a beautiful large wood effect table, an art material storage tower and a cupboard filled with art materials so you can sit and draw, paint, write or be crafty. Following the success of the Art for Wellbeing Sessions with Luci last semester, we can deliver art sessions to small non-confidential groups. It's the perfect opportunity to try something new that can help with stress reduction, focus and distraction.

Art can be very empowering, so come along and enjoy an activity or learn a new skill for your wellbeing toolbox. Be inspired by Loch View Gallery, which has a growing collection of amazing pieces of artwork donated by talented students who have used and benefited from this space and our wide range of craft resources. It engages students in art who would not otherwise be able to afford to, and ensures that we are inclusive and art is available to all.

Be productive

The quiet study pod is a small but private space with access to plug points. You can simply turn up to study, check e-mails or just sit and relax taking in the beautiful views out onto the green space of Queens Court. Students love getting away from the hustle and bustle of other busy spaces at Loch View.

Be relaxed

With an inviting sofa covered with soft cushions and two comfortable beanbag chairs and footstool, this is the place to enjoy some serious chill time. Grab a weighted blanket and regain composure and clarity, de-stress or simply warm up during a cold winter's day.

Loch View library is fully stocked and growing daily with kind donations. Books are available to read within Loch View or taken away and borrowed (but please bring them back so others can enjoy them too).

Students and staff can write motivational messages or quotes on our jumbo chalk wall. Want to write one yourself? Pop in, or if you are not on campus any time soon and have a favourite message or contact Fiona directly and she will make it happen.

Around Loch View, there is a range of stress-busting toys available to borrow. Stress balls are a firm favourite! We also have a growing variety of plants (any donations are greatly received), which you are welcome to tend and nurture.

Teddy bears in the Sensory Room

The Sensory Room

Students can immerse themselves in the Sensory Room which can be found on the left-hand side of the room just after the water cooler. A group of students from the Student Union (VP Communities) have designed, acquired University funding, set up and launched this amazingly inviting and relaxing room. Come in and relax with lava lamps, a sensory lamp, a water feature, bean beds, blankets (included weighted) and sensory-sensitive toys.

Bee Happy Pillow

The Acorn Room

This is private bookable space has been designed and set up with wellbeing in mind. Previously home to our Student Hub office, the space has now been transformed beyond recognition into the Acorn Room training room because “from small acorns might oaks grow”.

The Acorn Room is a comfortable, informal and relaxed area and multi-purpose space which is bookable (direct via Loch View only) for events holding up to 20 students. An abundance of natural light comes from wall-to-wall windows enhanced by the outlook onto trees and bushes connecting people with nature.

The Mental Health Wellbeing Team (Craig, Christine, Anne and Fiona) will be running various groups and activities including mindfulness and lifestyle groups. All activities are carefully selected to promote good mental health and wellbeing. Find out what's happening on our Wellbeing Calendar. Information will also be available on the TV screens around University, weekly bulletins, social media and Be Connected.
