English language requirements

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

  • IELTS Academic or UKVI 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) 169 overall with a minimum of 162 in each sub-skill
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) 180 overall with a minimum of 162 in each sub-skill
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) 60 overall with a minimum of 59 in each sub-skill

Course details

You can study Marketing as a four-year single honour degree or take it in combination with one of 11 other courses to achieve a combined honours degree. In your first year, you’ll learn about the general principles of industry, management and marketing – foundations you’ll build on later in the degree. In your final year, you’ll be prepared to undertake a Marketing and Retail Consultancy project, designed to engage you with front-line business practices.

Industry-standard platforms, such as Google Academy, HubSpot and Hootsuite, as well as practical workshops have been incorporated into our modules enabling students to demonstrate to future employers that they possess the skills needed in the workplace.

You’ll be taught through a range of engaging lectures, seminars and workshops, all of which use a variety of different approaches. Some modules may involve the use of computer-based simulations or the chance to deal with real-world marketing problems undertaken for client organisations. You will experience teaching delivered by guest lecturers, who bring their expertise directly to you and deepen your understanding of marketing on the front-line of the business world. 


Assessment is through a combination of coursework and formal examinations. You’ll also be graded on your final-year dissertation – a comprehensive body of work focused on a particular aspect of retail you’re interested in.

Cost of living

If you’re domiciled in the UK, you can typically apply to your relevant funding body for help with living costs. This usually takes the form of student loans, grants or bursaries, and the amount awarded depends upon your personal circumstances and household income.

Our BA (Hons) Marketing course places a special focus on preparing you for the workplace, and our overall focus on personal and professional development is designed to help you achieve your career ambitions.

The course is informed and developed by feedback from our close industry links ensuring that the modules’ content is up to date and relevant. We have developed close relationships with industry bodies including the Chartered Institute of Marketing; the Marketing Society Scotland; the Scottish Retail Consortium; the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Scottish Grocers’ Federation.

You'll also have networking opportunities with professional leaders during guest lectures and networking events. The Consultancy Project will offer hands-on experience of working with a real company/ client and in combination with the Dissertation module you will learn how to use data insights to inform decisions.

You also have the opportunity to gain additional recognised industry qualifications and receive certifications alongside your degree or after your studies with limited effort.

Star Marketing Student of the Year Awards

Our students participate annually in the Star Marketing Student of the Year competition organised by the Marketing Society. University of Stirling Marketing students have won the prestigious award three times in the last seven years, competing with students from universities across Scotland.

The award sponsor Edrington-Beam Suntory UK (a premium liqueur and spirit brand) organises an Apprentice day looking for the most commercially aware and industry ready student. The winner wins a three month paid placement at Edrington-Beam Suntory UK. Our last winner has now secured a full-time job in the company.
