Contemporary Leadership in Early Years Practice
This short course is mainly for level 11 students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Early Years Practice Health Visiting. Develop your understanding of several topics relevant to leadership for early years practice.
The module is principally aimed at level 11 students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Early Years Practice Health Visiting. It is provided as a blended module with synchronous and asynchronous teaching and online materials covering a number of topics relevant to Leadership for Early Years Practice such as:
- leadership theories, and their application in the NHS
- leadership for the implementation of evidence-based practice
- leadership for community profiling and leadership for quality improvement
The blend of learning and topics covered makes the module both appealing and distinctive. It is a unique approach to contemporary health visiting programmes and is one of the factors that makes the Stirling study mode attractive to students.
It involves the development of a range of skills including presentation skills and implementation knowledge and skills for improving the quality of health care practice. These are directly relevant to the practice of contemporary health visiting.
You are required to have the ability to study at degree level (minimum academic level SCQF Level 9).
Learing Outcome 1: Evidence a critical understanding of the skills and knowledge required to undertake key leadership roles in Early Years Practice including the role of the Named Person and Lead Professional.
Learing Outcome 2: Demonstrate application of leadership skills and manage interventions to improve children and their family’s wellbeing.
Learing Outcome 3: Evaluate relevant policies and legislation and demonstrate the ability to apply these to practice.
Learing Outcome 4: Understand and effectively use a range of evidence and data sources including population health surveillance and public health data to inform practice delivery.
Structure and content
This short course provides knowledge on:
- the background to theories of leadership
- the current focus on leadership at all levels within the NHS
- the need for the implementation of evidence-based knowledge to support practice and the necessity for a working knowledge of quality improvement methods and leadership for these
Delivery and assessment
The module will be delivered using a range of approaches including (when possible) face to face lectures and online activities. The module includes two Masterclasses (similar to mini conferences) provided by guest lecturers who are subject experts. In addition, teaching and learning is supported through activities which may include live lectures; webinars, workshops, pre-recorded lectures, videos and podcasts. Other activities such as reading tasks are provided via Canvas (our virtual learning environment) and through the use of MS Teams.
The assessment methods involve an open book examination of the legal aspects of the module and a written assignment (due in on week 10 of the semester) of 3000 words based on the leadership aspects of the implementation of evidence-based practice in the students’ practice.
